A Listing of Bay Area Practicioners Specializing in CFIDS and FMS

The following information should be accurate, but, if something isn’t, please feel free to send a note to Juliet Hattersley (all one lowercase word) at sbcglobal.net. Any opinions expressed here are my own and shouldn’t deter you from finding out for yourself if you would like to see any of these practicioners. I cannot be held responsible for any inaccuracies on the following listing, whether informational or sentimental. Please check everything out for yourself.

Also, as this list grows, I will not be able to take the time out to find out what sorts of insurance, etc., each practicioner takes. If you see a name without any of that information, I got it from one of the CFIDS support group e-mail lists to which I belong where that info wasn’t readily available. Other doctor lists are available at

  • Co-Cure,
  • FMSCommunity.org,
  • ImmuneSupport.com,
  • and just about every other CFIDS or FMS site on the internet.

Co-authored Solving the Puzzle of CFIDS (with Dr. Murray Susser in Los Angeles, who was featured in The Alternative Medicine Guide -- see books section of this site). Office was the nicest and most helpful of any I called. Also was recommended to me by the office of another physician in Marin.
Stephen Langer, MD 510-548-7384 Berkeley Psychiatry and General Medicine $225 for half-hour to 45 minute appointment Featured on p.167 of the Alternative Medicine Guide (see books section of this site and on ImmuneSupport.com. Featured on p.246 of the Alternative Medicine Guide (see books section of this site). Has many CFIDS patients. Though Cutler is not currently taking on any more patients, she has two associates in her office to whom she has taught the Allergy Testing techniques. Office was okay but not stellar in terms of friendliness and helpfulness.
Elson Haas, MD, and Associates (Preventive Medical Center of Marin) 415-924-2273 or see website San Rafael Multi-disciplinary approach using allopathic and alternative medicine techniques
    • $295 for half hour to hour long initial appointment
    • follow up appointment prices TBD
Dr. Haas has a great reputation with many people in the Bay Area and has authored several books on nutrition that enjoy a large following. But, it’s not necessarily him you'll be seeing when you call for an appointment. My experience with an associate of his wasn’t great, but it wasn’t horrible either. She just didn’t seem to help me, so I quit going to her. Office is very efficient, and they take Medicare and many other forms of health insurance.
Robert Cathcart, MD 650-949-2822 Los Altos Orthomolecular Medicine
    • $300 for initial visit, plus approximately $600-700 more in lab fees (including hair analysis tests)
    • $200 follow up visits
Featured on about.com's CFIDS and FMS site. Also has his own site at www.orthomed.com. Office was somewhat nice and helpful.
John Toth, MD 925-682-5660 Concord General Practitioner
    • $250 for 45 minute appointment
    • $360 for 60 minute appointment
    • $85 for 15 minute long follow up appointments
    • will bill PPO insurance
One of the only practicioners I found so far who would take any kind of insurance. Office was okay in terms of friendliness and helpfulness.
Jeffrey Miller, DC 925-485-1316 Pleasanton-- Has other offices in Santa Clara and Castro Valley (see notes). Chiropractics, Pain Care, Rehabilitation. Works with FMS patients. Fee might be negotiable. Will bill insurance too-- call office for details. Office in Santa Clara's # is 408-260-1600. Office in Castro Valley's # is 510-537-5333. Office very friendly but not too helpful in terms of actual information.
